OTHER APPLICATIONS

With the increase in technological developments, the use of cork and its derivatives outside the stopper industry has grown almost exponentially, particularly in the building industry, for flooring and insulation, but also in an infinity of other applications such as leather goods, clothing, fishing, furniture, footwear or the automotive or even space industries.

These derivatives – white agglomerate, black agglomerate andrubbercork – can be simple or compound and are obtained from the natural cork processing procedures, being made from granulate resulting from the grinding of virgin cork and from the debris and waste of other processing operations.

White agglomerate (which is essentially the result of grinding virgin cork) can be used for corkboards, footwear, computer printers, boxes and trays, protective helmets, buoys, life jackets and floats, fishing rod handles, carpets, handbags and briefcases, and even as fabric for clothing and paper. In sport, white cork agglomerate is used in hockey, cricket and baseball balls, shuttlecocks, table tennis rackets, the little balls in whistles, golf clubs, darts boards and cartridge wads. In industry it can be used for mechanical joints or anti-vibration material in a range of machinery.

Black agglomerate (made from cork waste which is ground and heated to a high temperatures) is used above all as thermal, acoustic, and vibration insulation and, due to its colour, for decorative purposes.

Grains of cork are combined with rubber to make rubbercork, another type of agglomerate manufactured using a quite different production technology and also with different areas of application. The combination of elasticity and other characteristics of cork with the strength of rubber is transformed into an essential material for automotive and electrical industries, in gaskets for machinery, engines and transformers and heavy traffic flooring.
